In April 1993, the New School, in association with the ECEP, offered
the first major New York festival of East and Central European
films since the fall of the Communist regimes. Cinema in Transition:
Recent Films from East and Central Europe (April 16-29, 1993)
featured recent works from a region known for its rich contribution
to both the art and industry of film making. The Festival included
24 feature films and feature-length documentaries, drawn from
the cinemas of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria,
Albania, and the former Yugoslavia. The Festival was accompanied
by a full-day symposium that featured well known filmmakers and
film critics from the region. The Festival, planned to take place
bi-annually, provides a unique window for American audiences into
the process of social change in the countries of East and Central
Europe.
