East and Central Europe Journal Donation Project

This project was initiated in the winter of 1991 by Professor Arien Mack, who is not only Director of the project, but also the Editor of Social Research. The Journal Donation Project, which was an outgrowth of the relationship between Social Research and scholars in the region, has also become an important complement to the activities of ECEP. The aim of the Project is to help rebuild and develop the scholarly periodical collections, especially in the social sciences, of libraries throughout the region. The Project appeals to academic journal publishers to donate 15 or more subscriptions to regional libraries for a period of three years. Recipient libraries are notified of the availability of newly donated titles and forward their specific requests to the Project on a regular basis. Frequent communication is maintained with recipient libraries to monitor the receipt of journals and particular journal needs which the Project then attempts to fulfill. Over 600 journal titles (totaling approx. 25,000 journals per year), covering the social sciences, humanities, arts, sciences, law, medicine, business, technology, and current events, are currently being sent to more than 250 libraries throughout the region.
