Internships

Internships
Students matriculated in the Bachelor's Program can earn non-liberal arts credit for internships arranged through the School of Undergraduate Studies office on the 9th floor at 66 West 12th Street. To be eligible, students must have completed at least 12 credits in residence at The New School, have less than 78 transfer credits and be in good academic standing. Students can take two internships as part of their program of study. Internships are set up as courses, normally carrying three credits and completed in an academic term. The student must work a minimum of 12-15 hours per week for a semester to earn the three credits. Completed applications must be received at least one week prior to the start of the semester of the internship.

Application Process
Students interested in earning credits for an internship should discuss this option with a faculty advisor and then meet with Michelle Materre, associate director of the School of Undergraduate Studies, to discuss how the internship will enrich their program of study and professional goals. If the idea is approved, the student must provide documentation about the organization hosting the internship, along with a brief job description. If the internship meets the requirements, the student will be given the Internship Contract form to be completed by the student and the host organization.
The contract must be signed and returned, along with a thorough description of the intern's responsibilities provided by the organization or the on-site supervisor. The contact must specify:

  • Number of hours intern is expected to work
  • Dates of the internship
  • Name, title, mailing address, phone number and email of on-site supervisor.

The job description and completed contract must be submitted for approval to Ms. Materre, accompanied by the student's written explanation of how the internship will enhance their course of study. These steps must be completed before or during the registration period of the academic term for which the internship is proposed.

Once Ms. Materre approves the student's paperwork, they may register for internship credits. Tuition for internships is charged per credit, the same as other courses in the Bachelor's Program. Internships have the same add/drop deadlines as regular courses.

Evaluation
When internship is complete, students are required to submit a four-to-seven page written report to Ms. Materre. It should describe the internship experience. The on-site supervisor must complete a brief evaluation form provided by The New School and return it separately to Ms. Materre. Once the student's submission is approved, they will receive a grade of "P" (Pass) or "U" (Unsatisfactory; no credit is awarded).
