Bachelor's-Master's Degree Student Profile

Roy Scranton

Bachelor's Program Graduate, 2008
Master's Program Graduate, The New School for Social Research, 2010

The New School's longstanding tradition of independent thought and its location in New York City enticed Roy Scranton to leave his home in Oregon and move east to enroll at the university. "I came to The New School with the hope of finishing my bachelor's degree and going directly into the master's program in Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research. The school's renowned faculty and the fact that I could start my master's while doing my bachelor's were two very big draws for me."

An Iraq war vet and novelist, Roy also enjoyed interacting with the nontraditional students who enroll in the Bachelor's Program. "Because most students are working adults, they bring a rich variety of real world experience to the classroom. The Bachelor's Program gives you the independence to pursue an intellectual path that suits you the best, and it gives you great professors and courses to make that happen."

After completing his undergraduate coursework in December 2008, Roy was accepted into the master's program in Liberal Studies at The New School for Social Research. He earned his master of arts degree in May 2010. "I'm proud of The New School's history and proud to have gone there."  His master's thesis, War and the City, ran as a five-part series in the New York Times' Home Fires blog.  He is currently pursuing a doctorate in English at Princeton University.
