Bachelor's Program

The Bachelor’s Program at The New School for General Studies is an individualized program of study in the liberal arts for students returning to college to complete their undergraduate degrees. While it is one of several bachelor’s degree programs offered at the university, it is the only one designed specifically for adults. We believe that the understanding of the individual, society, and the world around us that comes from the study of the liberal arts should be at the heart of undergraduate education. We also believe in a learning process that is active and experiential and that encourages free inquiry and self-responsibility for learning.

With the assistance of a faculty advisor, each student selects a program of study based on his or her intellectual interests and professional goals. In our program you'll find degree options for students who prefer to do all their coursework online, an accelerated bachelor's/master's study option, internships, and individual academic and career advising. We think you'll find the program innovative, challenging, and flexible. Welcome!

Fall & Summer Registration

With spring courses in full swing, it is time to take a moment to plan for the upcoming summer and fall semesters. As we mentioned recently in an e-mail, registration for Summer and Fall courses will be in April. Please read the following carefully.

Registration Dates:
Registration advising for Summer AND Fall 2008 courses begins Monday, March 31 and ends Friday, May 2. This time in April is specially set aside for registration advising, so please make all efforts to meet with your advisor. If you register late for Fall (after August 10th), you will incur a late fee of $150 and will find many classes full.

The Course Catalog:
You will not be receiving hard copies in time for the Summer or Fall registration. The Summer and Fall Catalogs are available here.

At that website, you have access to all the up-to-date information and documents you need for registration, including links to Financial Aid, the Bursar, the Health Center, Areas of Study, the Bachelor's/Master's option, and many others. For courses and other important registration information, click on “Course Information” in the menu on the left. Also please log onto your MyNewSchool account to check for any registration holds.

In preparation for your advising session, please review the course catalog thoroughly and set down your tentative course selections in the Academic Plan Sheet, downloadable at the “Course Information” section of our website. If you'd like additional information about the courses, many syllabi will be available electronically in the Bachelor’s Program office, or you may contact the department in which the course is offered. Your advisor will help you decide if these courses are appropriate for you.

Dates:

March 17: Advisor schedules ready. Call 212 229 5119 to make an appointment.

March 31 – May 2: Advising hours M-F, 11- 6

June 2: Summer classes begin

For Fall 2008: Registration & Payment or Arrangement for Payment due August 10

September 2: Fall classes begin

Advising and Registration Most continuing students will meet with the same faculty advisor as last semester. All students will register for their classes through MyNewSchool, including online-only students (doing all their coursework online). After discussing your course selections with your advisor, you will receive instructions on how to register through MyNewSchool.

Credit for Prior Learning If you are considering applying for credit for prior learning, you should discuss this option with your advisor and meet with Rachel Heiman, this year’s prior learning coordinator. You may make an appointment to see Rachel at the same time you schedule your regular registration advising appointment.

Internships If you are interested in pursuing an internship during the spring semester, you should review the forms and application information on the website (click on “Internships” under “Bachelor’s Program in Liberal Arts” in the menu on the left), discuss the process with your advisor, and then have it approved by Gustav Peebles. The internship contract must also be signed by your on-site supervisor.

Writing Center The University Writing Center offers support services for students who would like help with writing assignments and projects. For location information, or to make an appointment, please visit http://www.newschool.edu/admin/writingcenter/.

Contact Information If your contact information has changed, please make updates on your student data sheet when you come in for your registration appointment, or email changes to garretty@newschool.edu or petlickm@newschool.edu. Please note that the Records Office does not automatically forward your new information to us if you fill out their form or make updates via MyNewSchool. Also, we occasionally pass on information to students via email, so if you have not received anything, we probably do not have your current email address. Be sure to add ‘garretty@newschool.edu and petlickm@newschool.edu’ to your ‘safe’ list if you have a program which filters out bulk mail.

We all look forward to seeing you in April.
