Wireless

The New School offers wireless Internet access campus-wide on a secure network: "newschoolnet".

Wireless is available to degree and credit-seeking students, faculty, staff, and alumni, too. Login is required campus-wide, so others are not able to use the service. This makes your laptop safer from viruses, spyware and other threats and makes more bandwidth available to you. Login with your "NetID" username and password. (Alumni, use your "Alumni Email" username and password.)

For your protection and network security, anti-virus software and current virus definitions are required for a Windows PC to login to "newschoolnet". The New School has made it easy for you to comply.

  • The New School offers Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition free to credit-seeking students, faculty and staff! This software entitles you to free updates for as long as you are enrolled at or affiliated with The New School. To get the software, login to MyNewSchool and look in the Academic Technology box under the "Student", "Faculty" or "Employee" tab.
  • In addition to Symantec, all leading software meets the requirement. This includes Norton, McAfee, TrendMicro, AVG, etc. If you need anti-virus software and/or virus definition updates, the Clean Access Agent (CCA) login software will help you get and install them, regardless of which application you use.
  • Guest lecturers may simply download the free version of AVG software, which is compliant, at free.grisoft.com.

Q: How do I login?
A: When you launch your browser and try to go to the Internet, your browser will redirect you to a page that will instruct you to login. Windows users only: you use this browser login window at first use only and are prompted to install the Clean Access Agent. After that, you must use the Clean Access Agent to login.

Q: Why do I need to login?
A: Prior to login, wireless hot spots were entirely open -- to the university community and the general public alike -- posing security and virus risks and taking up your bandwidth, too.

Q: Can I use newschoolnet if I do not have a NetID or if I am a non-degree, continuing education student?
A: No. Non-degree students do not have access to Wireless. (Alumni, use your "Alumni Email" username and password.)

Q: What happens if I move throughout a building, or from one building to another?
A: You will stay connected as you go from one access point directly into the range of another. However, if your connection is lost, it will resume when you re-enter a campus wireless hotspot.

Q: Which Web browsers can I use?
A: Based on on campus tests, all browsers in all operating systems work. Tested browsers include Internet Explorer, Firefox, Netscape, Opera, and Safari. If you use a Mac, Firefox and Opera seem slightly smoother. When using Internet Explorer on a Mac, the security certificate appears to install okay, but you are prompted for it at every login regardless. In Netscape and Safari on a Mac, you get an error message that the "certificate is not valid", but it actually installs and works fine.

Q: I am following all instructions, but my Windows PC won't let me log in. Any tip?
A: Are you running special Internet Security software on your laptop? If so, turn it off using the icon in your system tray (lower-right corner of desktop). Try that. This seems to be a common solution, especially with Norton's Internet Security, which prevents the login.

Q: I am following all instructions, but my Mac won't let me log in. Any tip?
A: Clear the cache and history in your Web browser and try again. If that doesn't work, try this: First, go to System Preferences > Network. Select "Airport". Click on the TCP/IP tab. Then "Renew DHCP".

Q: Why am I getting "kicked off the network" every 5 or 10 minutes?
A: Are you running iTunes with "music sharing" turned on? If so, turn it off. A network scanner sees frequent bursts of data traffic caused by a service such as iTunes music sharing as a potential virus threat and quarantines you temporarily. You will continue to be quarantined temporarily you stop the data "broadcast".

Q: Specifically, how do I login and access the Internet on my Windows PC?
A: You must use the Clean Access Agent software. You install Clean Access only once, on your first login, and only if you have the Windows operating system. The software runs in your system tray (lower-right corner of desktop). You'll see the blue-green icon. Login, and logout, using its menu and the popup Window that appears.

Q: How do I login using Linux, Unix, Palm OS, etc?
A: Other Operating Systems, including Linux, Unix and Palm OS, gain access through the browser, like a Mac.

Q: Does newschoolnet check for Anti-Virus updates for Mac, Linux, etc?
A: No. There are no checks for operating systems other than Windows. The Windows OS is most susceptible to Viruses, Spyware, and other risks.

Q: What happens if my Windows PC has Viruses, Spyware, or Worms?
A: Newschoolnet checks for a current release of Symantec, McAfee, Trend-Micro, or AVG AntiVirus software and current virus definitions.
