Q. How can faculty members get more print points if they need it for academic purposes?
A. The academic department transfers funds to Academic Technology which assigns points based on NetID username(s). This is the case whether for in-class demonstration or course material preparation. This could also be done to add points to staff or student print accounts. Email at@newschool.edu re: "funds reclassification for print points" a few weeks in advance. Departmental funds are first reclassified to Academic Technology for the academic year through August 15. Then individual accounts are credited. Alternatively, with prior authorization you may wish to purchase points from the via the online print point purchase form or at the Cashier's Office and request to be reimbursed by your department, but this is not recommended due to the excessive overhead required.

Q: What is RGB color mode vs. CMYK color mode, and which is better for color printing?
A: RGB (red-green-blue) are the colors of light. CMYK (cyan-magenta-yellow-black) are the colors of paints and inks. Adobe RGB (1998) is the recommended profile for printing in Academic Technology Labs. RGB color converts automatically at each printer for quality color. Adobe CS design applications in the labs default to RGB mode, Adobe RGB (1998) regardless of whether or not they are vector or raster based.

Note to those of you who are advanced "color managers": Technically, RGB mode is optimal for printing a raster file such as a Photoshop file or jpeg, while CMYK is optimal when printing a vector file such as an Illustrator file or gif.

Q: How is color managed in the labs for quality?
A: Academic Technology has implemented a deliberate and thorough plan for color management. This way, "what you see is what you get." Input devices (such as scanners), monitors, and color printers are all calibrated and synchronized to create uniform color throughout your workflow.
When you create a new file in the labs, the file is by default set for you to work with the correct color profiles. RGB mode Adobe RGB (1998) is the default for Adobe CS applications. The working RGB color profile is "Adobe 1998", and the working CMYK color profile is "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP)v2".
If you worked with a different color profile at home and embedded the profile into your documents, when you open the files in the labs choose "Convert Document's Colors to the Working Space" when you are prompted. This will bring your file into the correct lab workflow.

Q: Why does my print look different than what is displayed on my monitor?
A: It may be the lighting conditions in your room. In addition, some colors that display in RGB color on the monitor cannot be printed as they appear. For example, colors that are "out of gamut", such as "Registration Black", will never print properly.

Q: What are PANTONE colors and how can I use them?
A: PANTONE is a company which makes consistent color swatches. It does this by using the exact percentage color mixture for graphic design programs and any printers. You may wish to use PANTONE Color mode and use the PANTONE swatches for your colors. Use the guidelines below for Adobe CS applications:
Illustrator:
Go to Window > Swatch library > PANTONE. When you are finished editing your file, save a copy as a PDF, this will also embed the color mode for output.
Photoshop:
Go to Window > Swatches. This opens the Color Palette then select "New Swatch" from Panel Options Menu in the upper left hand corner of Palette Window.
InDesign:
Go to Window > Swatches. In the swatch dialogue box select the arrow icon > New Color Swatch. Change color mode from CYMK to PANTONE.

Q: Can I use the U4ia color standard books to match colors with all color printers?
A. No. The U4ia color swatches are only a reference.

Q: How do I produce a reliable color printout of my U4ia project?
A. Make sure that the image is flattened to one layer, raster (not vector), and a maximum size of 8" (width) x 10" (height) and then "cut " to the exact size of the image. This gets rid of the black lines around the print out and any kind of cropping of the image.
