 : Frequently Asked Questions

What is my User ID? Your User ID is your New School ID # (for recent grads this is the same number as your student ID #).  This is the number beginning with an "N" and followed by 8 digits that can be found on your University Card. If you do not know what this number is, you can log in with your social security number.  To get your New School ID please call the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784. Due to privacy regulations this number cannot be given out via email. This number cannot be changed and is permanently attached to your New School record.

What is my PIN? Before you log into Alvin for the first time, your default PIN is set as your date of birth in the MMDDYY format. (For example, if your birth date is January 1, 2007 your default PIN will be 010107.) When you log into Alvin for the first time you will be prompted to change your PIN to another 6-digit number of your choice. Please choose a PIN that you will remember as you will continue to log in with the PIN you choose.

This is the first time I’m logging into Alvin and I tried entering my birth date in the MMDDYY format, but it’s not working. What should I do? This may be happening because we do not have your birth date in our records. If this is the case your default password will be the last 6 digits of your New School ID. (If you have questions about the ID, please see the first question). If you log in with the last 6 digits of your New School ID, please forward your birth date to the Office of Alumni Relations (contact info below) for our records. If you try this and you still cannot login please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784 or alumni@newschool.edu.

When I try to log into Alvin I receive a message that says, “Your access to Alvin has been disabled.” Why? What should I do? If you attempt to log into Alvin with an incorrect password 5 times successively your Alvin PIN will be deactivated. To have your Alvin PIN reset please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784 or alumni@newschool.edu.

I thought I logged in successfully but I was prompted to enter my old PIN again and then enter a new PIN. What’s going on? Don’t worry, this is supposed to happen! When you log into Alvin for the first time you are prompted to change your password to a 6-digit number of your choice. Just enter your old PIN (remember, the first time you log in this is your birth date) and then a 6-number PIN of your choice. Please pick a PIN that you will remember, because you will need to enter this number each time you log in to Alvin.

Is the login information I use for Alvin the same as the information I use for my alumni email account and to log on to wireless internet on The New School campus?
No, the information you use to login in to Alvin is different. (Although, you will use the same login information for your alumni email account and to access wireless internet on The New School campus.) If you need to receive this information please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784 or alumni@newschool.edu.

I received multiple degrees, with different graduation years, from The New School.  Can I change the graduation year that is displayed on my profile? Yes. Please contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784 or alumni@newschool.edu and we will have your record updated so your preferred graduation year is displayed on your online profile.

What information is displayed as default in the alumni directory profiles? We currently display mailing address, class year, and preferred college by default. If an alum has additional information displayed it is because he or she logged into Alvin and marked additional information to be displayed online. If you do not want your mailing address displayed, you can log in and hide it. If you are searching for a classmate and do not see any information it means either he or she has chosen to hide his or her contact information or we do not have information for that person on file.

How can I display additional contact information on my online profile?/ How can I keep my contact from being displayed on my online profile? Log into Alvin. Click on “Alumni Information.”  Click on “Show Directory Profile.” Check the boxes next to items you wish to include in the directory or uncheck the boxes next to items you wish to exclude.

The information listed in my online directory profile is not up to date. How can I change this? Log into Alvin. Click on “Alumni Information.”  Click on “Update Addresses and Phones” or “Update Email Addresses.” Click on the current contact information under development home or development preferred (note: the development contact information is the record used for all alumni mailings including all newsletters, invites, etc). Once you have made desired changes click submit.

I graduated from The New School in or prior to 1992 and want to request a transcript. It says in Alvin that only post-1992 alumni can request a transcript online. How can I request a copy of my transcript? Alumni who graduated in or before 1992 should request transcripts through the Registrar’s Office. To do this, please fill out the transcript request form and fax it to 212.229.5648 or mail it to The New School Registrar's Office, 65 Fifth Avenue, Ground Floor, New York, NY 10003.

If you have questions about transcript requests, call the Registrar’s Office at 212.229.5620 x1478. If you have difficulty finding the information you need you are always welcome to call our office at 212.229.5662 x3784 and we will assist you in getting in touch with the appropriate person.

Is there a career networking component to the Alumni Online Services? Not yet, but there will be! Currently, only Phase 1 of Alumni Online Services has been rolled out. More features, including career networking, will be rolled out shortly.

I don’t think the Alumni Online Services are user-friendly! Is there any reason you chose to use this type of program? Yes. The reason we use Alvin is because it is already set up to run with Banner, the database system used internally at The New School. Alvin is used not just by alumni, but also by students, faculty, and staff at The New School. It makes it possible for all of these constituencies to update their information and find information from their records themselves – without having to having to go through someone on the university staff with Banner access. Also, eventually alumni will be able to use MyNewSchool, a much more user-friendly interface (which works with Alvin), which will allow you to update your information, search for classmates, use the career networking feature, view a transcript, and more, all in one place! This first phase is just a starting point. We know it's not perfect! However, we are still very excited that, so far, alumni are now able to use this system to update their contact information, search for fellow alumni and (for post-1992 graduates) view their transcript online. If you ever need assistance navigating through Alvin, please fell free to contact the Office of Alumni Relations at 212.229.5662 x3784.
