University Writing Center
The University Writing Center helps students become better writers through individual tutoring sessions (face-to-face at The New School or by telephone) that cover every phase of the writing process. Students meet with tutors to brainstorm ideas for a paper, develop a rough draft, or discuss how to approach and organize an assignment. Students are encouraged to meet with tutors early in their writing process, and are asked to bring to the tutoring session the relevant assignment sheet and syllabus. Students with phone appointments are asked to email relevant materials in advance of the appointment (no later than 10:00 a.m. on the day of the appointment) to WritingCenter@newschool.edu.
Individual conferences with writing tutors support students’ development as writers through critical feedback, guidance, and provision of educational material. Tutors and students work collaboratively to improve student writing and develop academic writing skills. Tutors do not alter students’ work by proofreading or editing.
There are two types of tutors: generalist tutors work with all students, while ESL specialists work primarily with international students whose first language is not English. Students can choose to work with the type of tutor most appropriate to their needs.
The University Writing Center works with students from across the University on a walk-in basis or by scheduled appointments. Scheduled appointments can be face-to-face or via telephone. All appointments can be made, modified, and deleted online.
The University Writing Center is a program of the Office of the Provost.
