Office of the Provost

TIM MARSHALL

Tim MarshallTim Marshall became interim provost of The New School in March 2009. In this capacity, he is working closely with the university’s officers, deans, faculty, students, and trustees to more strongly place academic interests at the center of institutional planning and governance. In addition to the provost’s established responsibilities of overseeing academic planning, policy, and institutional research, the provost has authority over a newly created academic budget. Chief among the provost’s responsibilities are helping to develop multi-year plans for enrollment, faculty hiring, curriculum development, and academic resources including facilities.

Marshall was appointed Dean of Parsons The New School for Design in July 2006, and he will return to that role at the conclusion of his term as interim provost. From 2004 until his appointment as dean in 2006, Marshall served as Parsons’ Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Marshall has been instrumental to the initiation and development of an ambitious and comprehensive academic plan for the school that emphasizes a stronger faculty culture and the creation of more integrated and comprehensive suite of design degrees including new Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctorate programs. Marshall was awarded tenure as a faculty member in 2008.

Prior to joining Parsons, Marshall served in a number of academic leadership positions at the University of Western Sydney in Australia from 1994-2004, including chair of the School of Design and director of Academic and International Programs. In the past decade, he has also served as a consultant to academic institutions in Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, China and Singapore. Marshall has an extensive professional photography background and co-founded the Cadre Design group in Sydney specializing in web-based educational visualizations.

Marshall has written and lectured extensively on academic topics related to design research and design education and for professional design journals. This includes Design Dictionary: Perspectives in Design, the first publication of its kind in print (Birkhauser Press, 2007); “Designing Design Schools” (Design Perspectives, Envisioning Design for the XXI Century, Ibero Americano, Mexico City, 2005); and “Poetic Process and Professional Practice: A Case Study for Practitioner-led Design Research” (Techne-Design Wisdom, European Academy of Design, Barcelona, 2003). He also initiated and contributed to Eye magazine’s Australian Special Issue in 2002. Marshall is an invited member of the annual St. Moritz Design Summit, Raymond Loewy Foundation; an editorial board member of the London based journal The Issues, a journal of Philosophy and Media Arts; and a Visiting Professor of Design at China National Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai.

Born in Berkeley, California, to Australian parents, and raised in Canberra, Australia, Marshall received his education at the City Art Institute and College of Fine Arts at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He currently resides in New York City.
