As Provost, Dr. Westphal is the chief academic officer of the University and the University’s senior academic policy official. The Provost reports to the President and the University Board of Trustees and is responsible for all academic appointments and reappointments; all curriculum and program approvals; State certification and accreditation reviews; provides tenure recommendations to President and the Board of Trustees of the University and is the final judge for all academic grievances.

In cooperation with the University’s Executive Vice President, the Provost ensures that the University’s budget and financial plan supports the mission and priorities of the University. He is responsible for the University’s academic planning, policy and institutional research; supervises all of the University’s institutes and centers; oversees all of the University’s undergraduate and graduate programs; and performs such other duties as assigned by the President or the Board consistent with the position. Also, the Deans of all of the academic divisions report to the Provost.

As Senior Vice President for Research, Dr. Westphal oversees the University’s research efforts and works with the University’s Development Office to help identify funding opportunities and assist faculty with the development of research proposals. In addition, he coordinates and approves all funding requests and proposals from academic units and faculty.
