CONVOCATION SPEECHES 2003 In his remarks, President Kerrey encouraged the University community to celebrate and embrace the beginning of the new academic year. He recognized the excellence of the faculty, exemplified by those who were presented with University Teaching Awards. He also talked about how the University's history as a center for critical thinking inspired the presentation of this year's University in Exile Award to five Cuban citizens who have faced serious consequences for petitioning the Cuban government. Pablo Medina, faculty member at both Eugene Lang College and The New School, was ten years old at the time of the Cuban revolution. He shared his personal story and the role that the educational profession has in "instilling in human beings the ability to think independently." Osvaldo Pay Sardinas accepted the University in Exile Award on behalf of all of the honorees and invited the community to "lift your voices and demand the release of the prisoners of Cuba's Springtime as well as the release of all other political prisoners on the island." Adam Michnik, who was imprisoned in Poland 20 years ago when he was presented an Honorary Degree by the University, sent a message of support. > PRESIDENT KERREYS REMARKS
