Speaking Truth to Power:
Honoring a Defender of Human Rights




At the University’s 67th commencement ceremony on May 21 at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, President Bob Kerrey presented the University in Exile Award to Saad Eddin Ibrahim, activist, teacher, intellectual, prisoner of conscience and unbending spokesman for human rights and dignity in the Middle East. Poet John Hollander gave the commencement address and received an honorary degree. Honorary degrees were also conferred upon architect Charles Gwathmey, psychologist Daniel Kahneman, psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva and philanthropist Peter Lewis.
