ENGAGING THE WORLD, INVESTING IN NEW YORK,
PERFORMING FOR THE COMMUNITY, PROMOTING INNOVATION

DECEMBER 2003

The University announced the formation of the New School University Institute for Urban Education, established with a major grant from the U.S. Department of Education. The mission of the institute is to assist New York City high school students in fulfilling their educational potential through leveraging the resources of the University, and to provide young students with skills, information and a nurturing academic environment that will enhance their prospects for academic success and entry into college. The initiative by New School University is at the forefront of a national movement to establish cooperative and lasting relationships between institutions of higher education and high schools in their communities, with a view to improving the prospects for academic success among inner-city youth.

Eugene Lang faculty member Neil Gordon’s latest novel, The Company You Keep, was chosen as a New York Times Book Review Notable Book of the Year. Robert Redford is set to direct a film adaptation.

In a ceremony held on December 10, New School University dedicated Arnhold Hall (formerly University Hall, at 55 West 13th Street) to longtime trustee Henry H. Arnhold. The University also unveiled Tishman Gallery and the Theresa Lang Community and Student Center, both on the second floor of Arnhold Hall. The Tishman Gallery is named in honor of John L. Tishman. The Theresa Lang Community and Student Center honors Theresa and Eugene Lang.
