APRIL 2003

President Bob Kerrey served as Principal for a Day at Manhattan Village Academy High School, located on West 22nd Street in Manhattan, meeting with students and discussing the importance of higher education.

Paul Krugman, columnist on the op-ed page of The New York Times and professor of economics and international affairs at Princeton University, gave the Irene and Bernard L. Schwartz Lecture. The topic was the current state of the U.S. economy.

Mannes College of Music presented the inaugural composer-in-residence program, featuring the music of Bright Sheng. Sheng is a composer, conductor and pianist whose work is often inspired by the folk music of his native China. His Tibetan Dance and Two Poems from the Sung Dynasty were featured works on the program.

The New School’s department of communication kicked off the inaugural Dorothy H. Hirshon Film Festival. This annual event was established by a bequest from the late Dorothy Hirshon, a longtime trustee of New School University, with the mission of promoting excellence and education in the filmmaking arts. The first Hirshon film festival was devoted to documentary filmmaking and included lectures, screenings and master classes with artists-in-residence D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus.
