2003 New School University Honorary Degree Recipients
Charles Gwathmey, architect, received a doctor of fine arts.
John Hollander, poet and literary critic, received a doctor of humane letters. Mr. Hollander also gave the commencement address.
Saad Eddin Ibrahim, internationally renowned sociologist and human rights activist, received the University in Exile Award.
Daniel Kahneman, economist and holder of the Nobel Prize in Economics, received a doctor of humane letters.
Julia Kristeva, psychoanalyst and professor of linguistics, received a doctor of humane letters.
Peter Lewis, businessman and philanthropist, received a doctor of laws.

Special Lectures
The New School’s spring 2003 Dean’s Forum was on “Human Rights in a Changing World.” Panel discussions included “Aliens, Citizens and Residents in a Changing World” with Seyla Benhabib; “U.S. Exceptionalism: A Global Threat to Human Rights” with Ken Roth; and “Peace and Security” with Noeleen Heyzer.

The New School’s fall 2003 Dean’s Forum was on “The United States in the World: Where Do We Go From Here?” The forum included talks on “Liberty and Revolution: Are They Compatible?” with Ian Buruma and “Prospects of Peace in the Middle East” with Ambassador Dennis Ross.

The Graduate Faculty and its Social Research journal presented a conference entitiled “Islam: The Public and Private Spheres.”

The Selma Yontov Schwartz Lecture was on “Opera: A Transformative Experience” with Cori Ellison.

Filmmaker Atom Egoyan gave the Marshall McLuhan Lecture in April. The Marshall McLuhan lecture celebrates the intellectual heritage of the Canadian media visionary who coined the phrase, “The medium is the message.” In promoting scholarly study of communication media, this annual lecture, in keeping with McLuhan’s own analogical method of inquiry, draws on contem-porary innovative thinkers in a diverse range of fields.

Aristide Zolberg, the inaugural Eberstadt Professor in Political Science, gave a lecture on “Democracy in the New States.”

The University presented the second Irene and Bernard L. Schwartz Lecture. New York Times columnist and Princeton economist Paul Krugman discussed the drastic worsening of American economic prospects over the last two years.

Ian Cuthbertson gave the Estelle Tolkin Lecture on “The Real Threat of Bio-Terrorism.”

The inaugural Dorothy H. Hirshon Film Forum also took place in April. Artists-in-residence were D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. This annual event was established by a bequest from the late Dorothy H. Hirshon, a trustee of New School University for 61 years.

Leonard Lauder of Estée Lauder Companies, Inc., gave the second annual Stephan Weiss Lecture at Parsons School of Design in May. The annual Stephan Weiss Memorial Lecture was established by Parsons alumna and preeminent designer Donna Karan to commemorate the life of her late husband and business partner, sculptor Stephan Weiss.

Louis Fisher, award-winning expert on constitutional law and congressional authority gave the inaugural Graduate Faculty Alumni Lecture.
