Chairman’s Message

I am pleased this year to welcome the newest members of the New School volunteer community. Richard J. Bressler, Sheila C. Johnson, Michael J. Johnston, Richard L. Kauffman and Stephen Swid joined New School University as members of the board of trustees. I also am pleased to welcome 22 new members of the eight school-based boards of governors. This is the first time that the annual report includes biographical information on new members of the boards of governors - an expression befitting our gratitude for their service to the University and the growing role of these boards.

The members of the boards of governors have significantly enhanced the substantive work they do with the deans of each of the schools. Subcommittees focusing on areas such as development, public relations, alumni, partnerships and academic programs have become important components of the boards. These subcommittees increase the effectiveness of the boards of governors as they assist the deans and president in fulfilling the mission of the individual schools and their role as part of the broader University.

Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the 187 members of our boards of governors, we continue to grow as a community dedicated to providing the best resources possible for all those who take part in the New School University experience. Each year the board of trustees honors individuals who have given exceptional service to the University. The Distinguished Service Awards symbolize the critical importance of lay leaders and volunteers to private universities and represent the University’s gratitude to those whose faith in the New School sustains our work and gives us inspiration. The 2003 Distinguished Service Awards were presented to William H. Hayden and Elliot Stein, the 2003-2004 and 2002 -2003 chairs of the Annual Fund, respectively, and John Beerbower, R. Harcourt Dodds, Tess Gilder, Bevis Longstreth and Robert J. Morgado.

Highlighted throughout this report are the events that shaped the 2002-2003 year and contributed to the richness that is the New School. The activities and research of our deans, officers, faculty, students, alumni and administrative staff are evidence of our continuing engagement with the historic mission of the New School, both globally and in New York City. And as we move forward in further defining and reinventing the New School legacy, it is important to remember that our progress is a result of the commitment embodied by our volunteer community. This year’s annual report is dedicated to those volunteers, including Henry H. Arnhold, Sheila C. Johnson, Eugene M. Lang and John L. Tishman, who through their generosity of time and resources enable us to provide the best education possible for our students and enhance their quality of life on campus.
