THE NEW SCHOOL

Susan Wong

A graduate of Brown University with a degree in science, Susan Wong has a long-standing interest in the field of international affairs and enrolled in The New School’s program because she was able to pursue a graduate degree on a part-time basis while working full-time. She currently is working on her thesis on foreign policy and development while employed with the State Department in Washington, D.C. and will graduate in May 2004. In July, Susan will leave Washington for a two-year assignment in China.

“I see my New School education as a supplement to preparing me for my career with the State Department,” Susan says. The impact of her New School experience has been substantial. When she started Foreign Service training immediately following completion of her coursework, she found that what she had learned in the classroom was an excellent foundation. “I am able to actively engage in many topics dealing with international affairs because of the diversity of subjects covered in the program.”

Susan’s education included participating in a six-week program in Argentina working at an NGO on development and civil society issues. As for her experience in the classroom at The New School, Susan has high praise for the faculty. “The teachers in the international affairs program maintain an open door policy which makes approaching and holding discussions with them very easy.” This has been especially helpful since she is writing her thesis while living away from New York City. Susan has formed a strong connection with her instructors and with the University, a tie she believes will last for many years.
