MANNES COLLEGE OF MUSIC

Indira Mahajan

Indira Mahajan’s exotic physical beauty combines with a “pure and agile soprano” (New York Post) and natural theatrical instincts to create a compelling presence on the opera and concert stage. In the past season, Indira has used her considerable gifts to add several important new roles to her repertoire, including Violetta in La Traviata and Mimi from La Bohème. She also has performed the roles of Gilda from Rigoletto, Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni and the title role of Lucia di Lammermoor.

This 2003-2004 season, Indira builds on her earlier successes and performs Gilda in Stephanie Sundine’s production of Rigoletto at the Fort Worth Opera, conducted by Joseph Illick, and Donna Elvira in the Linda Ade Brand production of Don Giovanni at the Lyric Opera of Kansas City. In New York she will appear in the Richard Tucker Gala at Avery Fisher Hall. She will perform Mimi in La Bohème for the first time in the Dayton Opera production and again in a new production directed by Francesca Zambello at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

A graduate of Mannes College of Music, Indira received her master of music degree in 1994. Indira says, “The training I received at Mannes has been invaluable in preparing me for an operatic career. I had the privilege of working with a first-rate faculty who supported and nurtured my development in a uniquely intimate setting. The quality of musicianship and performance opportunities at Mannes laid the groundwork for my artistic development. While at Mannes, I performed a wide range of vocal repertoire, working with specialists in early music and contemporary opera. This diversity is reflected in the roles that I now perform.”
