The gentle hand, nurturing vision and intrepid spirit of Vera
G. List are evident throughout this University. Vera appreciated
her good fortune and felt it was the responsibility of someone in
her position to assist those less blessed, and she never lost her
passionate commitment to causes, institutions and individuals who
could improve the condition of humankind. She
closely identified with the University's mission, and each new academic
division that was added made sense to her in terms of the University's
legacy of tolerance and inclusion. She was elected to the Board
in 1956 and was a Life Trustee from 1985 until her death in 2002.
Vera's spirit remains alive in the life of the University through
the concreteness and greatness of her legacy: her scholarships,
her endowed professorships, her Institute, her courtyard, and her
gifts to the Art Collection, which assured that the University would
have one of the finest collections of contemporary art to be found
at any educational institution.
