Some men talk and leave little, some men build and leave legacies. John
L. Tishman is a builder. For more than twenty years, John has been a pivotal
force in the growth and success of New School University. Since joining
the Board of Trustees in 1981, he has contributed to the development of
the University in countless ways. John has been a key advisor on facilities
planning, most recently bringing his deep experience and far-reaching
talent to every aspect of the University Hall building project. The architectural
rendering gracing the cover of this report was created with John's careful
guidance. As Chair of the Board's Educational Policy Committee, he steered
the committee to sharpen the University's intellectual mission and brought
our curriculum into the 21st-century with hisinsight into the transformational
potential of new technologies. John's profound commitment to the values
of the University, his quiet capacity to move the Board's work along,
his intelligence, humility and understanding are among the qualities that
led his colleagues to elect him Chair of the Board of Trustees in 1995.
With his stewardship, the Board has flourished. Since my arrival here
as President a year ago, John has been immensely generous with his advice,
time and friendship. Even as he steps down as Chair in May 2002, he is
someone the Board continues to turn to for critical assignments like the
chairmanship of the Eugene Lang College Board of Governors.
John is one of the great trustees of this institution. The University
gratefully acknowledges his dedicated leadership and looks forward to
the continued benefit of his counsel.
This annual report is respectfully and affectionately dedicated to John
L. Tishman.
