Have you noticed how often people lock their car doors when they are in fact trying to roll down their windows, that most folks cant program their cellular phone to speed dial their own voice mail, and that people in our program never seem to know in advance if an elevator is going up or down. Why is that? User error? Poor design? Hangovers? This course explores the potential disconnect between user experience and designer intent. It investigates various means of preventing regrettable mishaps with everyday design through analysis of potential users, possible testing methods, and various means of analyzing test results. Along the way, the class will explore some historically horrible designs, as well as learn to throw around expensive sounding words like usability, and heuristics.
