What are the formal elements that define a great work of cinema? What are the influences that inform great works? What are the tools and processes that aid on the creation of work that is engaging and seductive? In this course we study and analyze the language of cinema, and learn about the tools and techniques of the director, the cinematographer, the production designer and the editor. In class, students analyze a range of cinema from popular to avant garde to learn about these tools and techniques and how they are used in a formal manner to create a poetic effect. Open to:
