Citizens' disaffection and policy elites' governing incapacity are key complaints about the working of today's Western democracies, sometimes dubbed "post-democracies". The course will review institutional remedies as suggested by deliberative theorists and participatory practitioners of liberal democracy. Participants will be encouraged to think about and evaluate pathways to democratic renewal.
