What's universal in the human mind, and what is shaped by people's experience of interacting with the physical and social world? In this course we will explore how the diversity of the human experience is reflected in the mind. 20th-century theories of concepts emphasized their innateness and universality, but recent studies show that people with different patterns of linguistic, cultural, and bodily experience think differently, in predictable ways. By investigating the experiential relativity of the mind, we can uncover universal processes by which people turn their concrete interactions with the environment into abstract thoughts.
