This seminar will deal with a number of modern thinkers who have been concerned with the meaning and role of violence (including religious and political violence). Readings will include selections from the work of Georges Sorel, Franz Fanon, Jean-Paul Sartre, Carl Schmitt, Hannah Arendt, and Jan Assmann.
