The capacity to recognizing another person's humanity and subjectivity is one of the things that make us human. Yet, we routinely deny others their humanity, and depict them as animals, robots, or simply sub-human creatures. In this course we look at how and why this happens. What are the conditions that lead to the dehumanization of others, what are the motives behind it, and at its consequences. The focus is on the collective level, ranging from the objectification of women in everyday life to the extreme dehumanization of enemies in war.
