The seminar will focus on three research methods-participant observation, interviews, and archival-historical work. The emphasis of the seminar would be on the pragmatics of work, on how to collect, organize, and analyze data in the field. As such, it is a research practicum, and students will be expected to develop or deepen a project they are involved in throughout the course, culminating in an empirical paper.
