Race, Culture and Politics

Term: Spring 2010

Subject Code: GSOC

Course Number: 5067

This course investigates the impact of race and culture on North and South American politics in comparative perspective. Special focus will be on the United States and Brazil. Our starting point will be an interrogation of three the main concepts: politics, culture, and race (and ethnicity). This will involve the examination of topics such as multiculturalism and identity politics. We will also examine theories which attempt to explain American politics in light of race and ethnicity. Among the issues and events to be further discussed in this course will be the public policy, such as race-based affirmative action, and the recent campaign and election of President Barack Obama.
