Theories of Society [C, E]

Term: Fall 2009

This class explores five major paradigmatic insights in sociology: the turn from spirit (Hegel) to society (Marx); the idea of a specific social evolution (Marx, Spencer, Dewey, Durkheim); the development of functional differentiation by Marx and Durkheim; the turn from reason (Vernunft) to rationalization (Weber) and the integration of evolution, functional differentiation, and rationalization into a general theory of society (Parsons); and the turn from action to communication (Luhmann, Habermas). Readings include works by the authors discussed above.
