A critical investigation into the development of sociological theories since World War II. The course examines functionalism, conflict theory, exchange and rational choice theory, symbolic interactionism, ethnomethodology, phenomenology, feminist theory, and critical theory among other schools and traditions. Readings include works by Talcott Parsons, Ralf Dahrendorf, George Homans, Jon Elster, James Coleman, George Herbert Mead, Erving Goffman, Harold Garfinkel, Dorothy Smith, Michel Foucault, and Jurgen Habermas.
