Plato's Republic
Term:
Fall 2009
Subject Code:
GPHI
Course Number:
6104
After a brief, introductory look at the
Apology and
Symposium, the course concentrates on a careful reading of Plato's
Republic. Emphasis is placed on the connection between the argument of the dialogue and the dramatic action in the light of which the arguments take place. We thus examine the extent to which the dialogue as a whole may present a significantly different teaching than the apparent arguments of the dialogue suggest. References to other Platonic dialogues are brought in as necessary to augment our reading of the
Republic.
