Topics in Contemporary Social Theory
This course examines some recent discussions in social theory, with a focus on the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and others in his tradition. The first part of the course will look at the precursors of Bourdieus work; the second part will explore his oeuvre; the last part will turn to some efforts to revise or criticize Bourdieu, including the Luc Boltanski. Finally we will look at French sociologys reception and use in the United States. Graduate students will write a research paper and present the readings for one or more sessions in the seminar.
