This course examines some recent discussions in social theory, with a focus on the work of French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu and others in his tradition. The first part of the course will look at the precursors of Bourdieu�s work; the second part will explore his oeuvre; the last part will turn to some efforts to revise or criticize Bourdieu, including the Luc Boltanski. Finally we will look at French sociology�s reception and use in the United States. Graduate students will write a research paper and present the readings for one or more sessions in the seminar.
