This course meets the M.A. qualitative methods requirement. The aim of this seminar is to introduce graduate students to the 'interpretive turn' that is currently sweeping the human sciences. We will examine some of the most recent and influential approaches within this tradition: Intentionalism (as exemplified in the work of Quentin Skinner); Language Games (Ludwig Wittgenstein); Universal Pragmatics (Jurgen Habermas); Critical Hermeneutics (Hans Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur); Discursive Strategies (Michel Foucault); and Symbolic Practices (Pierre Bourdieu).
