Each student's curriculum is designed in consultation with the director of Academic Advisement and developed to enhance professional performance or compositional skills. All courses taken for diploma credit must be Mannes courses at the graduate level.

While all Mannes and some New School courses are available to professional studies students, only graduate credits earned at Mannes may be applied toward the diploma.

Qualifying tests are required for admission to particular courses. A performance jury is required in the appropriate concentrations during each year of residency. Orchestral instrument concentrators are required to participate in The Mannes Orchestra, ensembles, and repertory classes during each semester of residency; some concentrators are required to participate in chamber music.
