All students who major in orchestral instruments are automatically enrolled in the Mannes Orchestra and are required to play a ten minute seating audition at the beginning of each school year. A second round is scheduled for the beginning of the spring semester. Prepare carefully - this audition helps to determine seating, which rotates from concert to concert.
There will be a mandatory orchestra meeting on Wednesday, August 29 from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in the Concert Hall.
The audition will consist of:
- Three minutes from a standard concerto (no accompaniment)
- The excerpts listed below, bracketed sections only
- Sight-reading
Audition schedule
- New Students: August 21–23
- Returning Students: August 27, 28, 30
The exact audition schedule will be posted on the orchestra bulletin board by August 19. If you have a class conflict, notify Chris Gulhaugen immediately. The audition panel will include an academic dean, a conductor, the coordinator for instrumental studies, and department chairs, who will also take notes for chamber music assignments.
